(AC3 previously toyed with an underground section by including long, dull, maze-like tunnels, while Unity's Paris catacombs improved on that idea but served little purpose.)įranciade's tunnels are home to the new Raider enemy faction, looters who will attack in huge groups if disturbed but who will run from you should you kill each of their squads' beefier, armoured leaders. Dead Kings finally fulfils the promise of a fun subterranean Assassin's Creed adventure, with a network of Indiana Jones-style caverns, temples and quarries that stretch from one side of the map to another. But there are also three areas below the surface: the Catacombs, Quarry and Royal Crypt, which expand the map considerably. Long-term series fans will enjoy what lies hidden deep in the vault.Ībove ground there are three major districts to explore (the built-up Basilica, the rural Windmill and the expanse of the Cemetery), each of which is dense as an equivalent sector in Paris. ![]() But as impressive as the location is, it is what lies beneath it - and underneath the series' usual map - that is most worth exploring. The burnt-out beams and broken-down walls are a neat metaphor for Arno's own condition, as are the now-robbed graves of former French kings which once lay at the building's heart. The town is dominated by a ruined cathedral whose half-standing remains Arno must dutifully clamber over in the game's first main mission. Its foggy, muck-filled streets are a marked change from the bright, blood-soaked cobbles of Paris and while much of the architecture is familiar, a couple of environments stand out. It's a dark place, its mists seen through an Instagram filter, and like Arno it has suffered through the destruction of the recent Revolution. His mood is reflected in the DLC's deliberately dour, downtrodden surroundings: the muddy, provincial town of Franciade where he plans to bargain his passage overseas. But even if it had launched without bugs, it was still unlikely to have found a place in fans' hearts alongside the seafaring fun of Black Flag or the high points of Ezio's Renaissance trilogy. Unity, last year's major release and the first built specifically for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, was a technical embarrassment for Ubisoft, whose executives were forced to publicly apologise to fans, cancel the game's Season Pass and instead offer Dead Kings for free. His mood is fitting of the Assassin's Creed series as it stands today. Ubisoft's add-on acts as a coda to Unity's main campaign and - without wishing to spoil that - it's fair to say our hero is in a bit of a slump. The reason it works is that it has a highly volatile lacquer solvent and in the minutes while drying, it etches into the plastic surface, fusing with it. So the system I use is a special paint (it is the only one I know of in the World, that is readily available in small spray tins and works for the task). I'm against Retro-Bright because I don't believe it is a wise idea to chemically oxidize already aging plastic. The best description for yellowed plastics that were once white I would call "Bile Yellow" or maybe "Urine Yellow" if I was being charitable. There are various descriptive terms for the color Yellow for example, Canary Yellow, Daffodil Yellow etc. The under surface of the unit which had less long term light exposure was not as yellowed. I checked to see if it was just surface nicotine stains and cleaned it, but no, it is the usual probably sunlight induced chromophore changes. ![]() ![]() While I'm waiting to get some belts an try the Datasette, I turned my attention to the case of the Datasette which was horribly yellowed, worse than the photos show, inside I could see the original plastic color which was white or close to that. I would imagine these would be very difficult to get by now unless robbed from a generic tape deck.Īctually, the perfect substance to clean pinch rollers & rubber belts & idler wheels is Carbon-tetrachloride, but nearly impossible to get now so we are stuck with CO contact cleaner or IPA that is not as good on rubber. The other soft parts are an Idler wheel near the hubs with a rubber perimeter and the Pinch Roller. There are some belts for a Commodore Datasette on ebay but that is for a different looking recorder, I think a later machine for the C64 and I'm not sure if they would match, or maybe they do ? In the Datasette are the two belts one main drive belt and the other small one for the mechanical counter.ĭoes anyone know a source for these belts ? ![]() My favorite one to recondition was the Borg Warner 35. A similar term is used to describe the brake bands and clutches, rubber seals etc in an auto-transmission. When I repaired VCR's for a living many years ago, the terminology we used for any part with frictional coupling, that wasn't metal, typically ,rubber, cork or some synthetic substance was "the Soft Parts". I have bought a program on tape to try out, that is said to be tested & working (famous last words) I thought I would like to try loading some Programs from a tape, even though I have the SD2PET now & probably it is unlikely I could land a good set of Disk drives. That is requiring some work, but basically it is ok although there is some wear on the head and the pinch roller has seen some work. When I got my PET recently, it came with the original Datasette. ![]() ![]() It can also help with grammar, spelling, and other aspects of email composition.
